Powerboat Davits - Standpipe

As sailing cruisers we never had dinghy davits but now we a have a crane! Weird. For some reason I just associate "the crane" with Mega-Yachts. I'd seen this one arm lift on sailboats before, folks used them for lifting outboards and such. So I Googled "sailboat davit for dinghy" and got results for single pole dinghy hoist, now that sounded more like it. The search also returned powerboat davits - standpipe model with a few pictures. Ding! Now I don't feel so weird about "the crane," it's not a crane, cranes are much larger.

Our "hoist" as I'll refer to it from now on, can lift up to 600lbs. The Livingston weighs 235 plus the motor, fuel tank add about 160 lbs. We also plan to use the hoist to pick up our Yamaha Zuma Scooter (aka grocery getter)!

Being able to get the dinghy out of the water will keep our tender bottom clean. We will reduce drag since we won't have to tow her behind us while underway and  hoisting her up to the upper deck helps deter theft. (I'd love to see them try) I have always admired the ability to lift the dinghy up because it is so crucial to one's cruising lifestyle. Without the dinghy you are left to live dockside or worse yet, the trip is over because you can't get to shore. Having a simple, efficient system is suuuper important for us and everything we stand for at Project Motor Boat.

We let her get a little dirty bottom so we could mark where her boot stripe will go. Pics to follow.
